Document Fresco. Document by Elīna Vītola is one of the new fresco paintings that was recently exhibited at her solo exhibition To Pay an Arm and a Leg at Kogo Gallery (6.12.2024 — 8.2.2025). Through archival and other research, and hearing stories from unexpectedly found relatives in different parts of the world, the artist uncovered the twists and turns of her great-uncle’s life and the contradictions and silences about him in the family memories. This led the artist to employ aesthetic and ethical strategies in her project for exploring, understanding, and imagining what cannot be understood. The depictions on the fresco paintings she made are in tune with the visuality of the archival documents the artist worked with during her research and art’s decorative function to cover up the unpleasant “as if nothing happened, to cover it without a trace.”
