Introduction

As part of the project Driven (2023), the photo series Aftermath portrays the outcomes of the car enthusiasts’ gatherings/events depicted in the two-channel video. The skid marks from tyres on asphalt represent the aggressive car culture and fondness for cars found in Estonia and probably every other post-Soviet country.

About the artist

Karel Koplimets (b. 1986) is a photo, video and installation artist based in Tallinn. He studied for his MA in photography at the Estonian Academy of Arts (2013), and from 2020–2021, he participated in the post-academic course at HISK (Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten) in Belgium. Koplimets has participated in various exhibitions in Estonia and abroad. Recent exhibition projects include the group exhibition Coup de Ville (Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, 2024), the 22nd Biennial Sesc_Videobrasil (Sesc 24 de Maio, Brazil, 2023), the main exhibition at Tallinn Photomonth Trance (Tallinn Art Hall, Estonia, 2023) and solo show One Is the Loneliest Number in (AV17) Gallery (Lithuania, 2022). His works are included in various collections, including those of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (Finland), Musée de l’Elysée (Switzerland) and Kumu Art Museum (Estonia). He has also received the Estonian Artist Laureate Salary (2020–2022).
